Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to join?
No. The training is designed to work for complete beginners and experienced martial artists alike.

Is the training safe?
Yes. Although the techniques are based on real-world violence, training is done in a controlled and safe environment. You will not be thrown into anything you’re not ready for.

What should I wear?
Comfortable gym clothing, trainers, and bring water. Jeans or shorts, and sturdy footwear or boots are also commonly worn. No special uniforms needed.

What age group is the class for?
The Wednesday class is adult-focused. Most attendees are men, but all adults are welcome. For younger individuals or those with specific needs, private lessons will be more suitable.

Is this like a martial arts class?
Not exactly. Combatives is not a sport and doesn’t rely on techniques that require size, strength or speed.
It’s built for worst-case scenarios and prioritises simple, effective, instinctive responses.
You can train at your own pace, and conditioning improves naturally as you go.
We build confidence gradually and safely.
Pressure-testing is introduced slowly and safely, and always with your consent.
We cover awareness, avoidance, realistic pressure, and simple survival-based responses developed by top instructors from many real life experiences, never fantasy techniques.

Is it suitable if I’m older or unfit?
Yes — absolutely. Many students join in their 40s, 50s, 60s. This is NOT a fitness or workout based class or style.

I get nervous around violence. Will I still cope?
Yes. Managing fear and adrenaline is a major part of training.

Will I need to spar?
This is not a fighting sport like boxing or judo. Light sparring is used but always optional.

Do you teach knife defence and gun disarms?
Yes — but responsibly.

Are private lessons available?
Yes. Ideal for beginners, people who feel anxious in groups, or those wanting focused coaching.

Where exactly is the class located?
Dalwood village between Axminster and Honiton, Devon. Full details provided on enquiry.
